Get Organised, Become the Rulers and Change the Society!
The youth of our country draw inspiration from Martyr’s Day. This was the day when revolutionaries Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev ascended the gallows, with a smile. They passed on the responsibility of fulfilling their mandate to the youth of our country. They were youths just like us. These young martyrs emerged from our very society to challenge the might of colonial rule that suppressed even the slightest rebellion with brute force. They cared for our country’s oppressed and exploited. They drew forward the youth who aspired to create an India free from exploitation, injustice and plunder of British rule into the Naujavan Bharat Sabha and established a political party called the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association.
More than 60 years later, it is evident that the goal for which our revolutionary youth sacrificed their very lives remains unrealised.
In the 21st century, our country’s bourgeoisie is claiming to be a global power, on the basis of the appropriation of the value created by the mental and physical labour of our youth. The youth are facing extreme insecurity as they are denied their right to quality higher education and livelihood. 40% of our youth are malnourished. 50% of boys and 58% of girls attending school are constrained to quit studying even before they complete eighth class. The youth are floundering in search of elusive jobs.
The government uses the weapon of reservation to crush the struggles for livelihood and education of youth. The bourgeois parties use reservation to divide the youth into opposing camps of “for” and “against”, and hide the fact that this system is incapable of providing jobs for all. Our Rulers hide the fact that unemployment is unavoidable in the capitalist system.
Those youth who are employed are highly exploited, working limitless hours and facing inhuman conditions. There is no guarantee of continued employment and absolutely no rights.
Increasing privatisation and escalating costs have made education from primary level to university and technical education out of reach of lakhs and crores of our youth. Education has become a means for profit. Parents and care-givers are cutting back on necessities of life to save some money for their children’s higher education in the hope of securing a brighter future for them. Even after this kind of expenditure, the youth have to compete for a handful of jobs.
State terrorism and communal violence trap thousands of youth. Countless youth are wasting in jails, imprisoned merely on suspicion and the hopes of their families dashed to the ground. It is still harder to count the number of youth who have fallen victim to the bullets of our “security forces”.
Lakhs of our young men and women aspire to contribute their knowledge, skills and capabilities to the political, economic, social, sports and cultural life of the country. To realise these aspirations, our youth must come forward to take up the mantle of revolutionary change of society. This is the call to our youth today. The youth must take up this call for which Bhagat Singh and countless youth have sacrificed their lives. Youth must get organised, must become politically conscious.
Let us come forward to build such a society that will enable the youth to be educated and trained and enrich society with their abilities, their wisdom and knowledge. The youth must participate in the struggle, under the leadership of the working class, to build a society free of social injustice, inequality and insecurity. This is the only way forward.
