Protest against privatization of the municipal corporation

According to the report published in the Daily Tribune on 5th July, 2012, the municipal corporation unions sat for a joint meeting in the Jalandar district of Punjab on 4th July, in protest against the privatization of the cleaning work of the municipal corporation.

The unions of corporation cleaners, workers union, sewer men employees union, driver and technical works employees union, the municipal corporation grade-4 unions participated in the meeting.

It is well known that under the solid waste management project of the Punjab government, the work for cleaning has been contracted to a private company. The unions have warned the Punjab government that if it follows through with this plan, the sewage, water and cleaning work in Jalandar will be stopped.

They said that privatizing the work of cleaning up in Punjab would mean increasing monetary burden on the citizens. This will increase the expenditure of each household from Rs.50 to Rs.500 and from Rs.1000 to Rs.5000 per store, hospital, Dhaba, restaurant, wedding halls and hotels by way of tax. The private company will benefit from this.

It is reported that on 31st October 2011, the Chief Minister of Punjab took the decision that the cleaning work will be done by the municipal corporation itself, in the presence of the representatives of the municipal corporation during a meeting with them.
