In support of the Mayday call

The Call of the CC of the CGPI on the occasion of May Day 2014 which carries the byline `Build the united front of the working class and toiling masses around the program to ensure prosperity and protection for all!’ in the columns of MEL and on the web-site of the party organ, is a rallying cry that I endorse.

It comes at a time when the conscious workers of the country are participating against the privatization of vital sectors of the economy, and are resisting tooth and nail the entry of foreign banks and Indian monopoly houses into the financial sector.  Workers across the length and breadth of the economy are fighting to unionize themselves.  It also comes at a time when the peoples across the world are protesting against the Governments of their countries who are working overtime to impose austerity on them on a brutal scale.

It comes at a time of the continuing of the global crisis with no end in sight.  It comes at a time when the soon to be installed government after the 2014 Lok Sabha elections will push ahead with policies that favour the monopoly capitalists.  The workers know that no matter which formation comes to power, this will be the course that will be followed.

At this time, there is a propaganda war that the problem that India faces is that of `crony capitalism’ and that there are no classes, but only `aam admi’.  The call of the CC comes at a time when it is important to dispel such myths aimed at hoodwinking the workers and peasants, namely the vast majority of the country.  There is the ever present danger of conciliation with this line, overt or covert. The activities of the CPI(M) and the Left Front show that such dangers are still prevalent, evidenced by their theory of the ‘lesser evil’ of the Congress in relation to the BJP.

Such being the case, I would like to commend the CC on its clear spelling out the line that there can be only two programs, viz., that of the bourgeoisie and that of the broad masses, viz., that of socialism and communism.

I thank the CC for spelling out the demands, including those of secure and suitable employment for all, universal registration of all wage and salaried employment, guaranteed minimum wages and pension, rights of women, and guarantees for other basic human needs. The above go hand in hand with measures to halt and reverse the loot and plunder of the land and people, and with a consonance with the immediate political demands that constitute the movement in India, including fight against draconian laws, as well as electoral reform. An educated working class must also call for end to chauvinist hysteria and conciliation with imperialism and must support struggles of the peoples in other lands.

The CGPI reiterates the points above and emphasizes that communists must play the lead role in building the conscious movement of the future. Let all the points above be the backbone of the blueprint for the present and the future.

Sincerely,

A. Narayan, Bangalore
