Sewer men seek permanent jobs

Members of the Sewerage Workers’ Union of Punjab staged a protest in front of the Municipal Corporation office in Bhatinda on 11th February 2019.

The protesters raised slogans against the state government and accused it of not fulfilling their long-pending demands. It is a fact that on a number of occasions, resolutions regarding their demands have been passed at General House meetings, but nothing has taken place on the ground. The union charged the civic body with neglect of this issue.

The union demanded regularisation of 48 sewer men’s services, old-pension scheme for them, promotions, jobs to family members of sewer men who had died and salaries for the kind of the deceased, who had got jobs, at the earliest.

The sewer men pointed out that the sewerage system had been expanded in the city due to which their present strength is totally inadequate to manage the entire work of sewers. They said a total of 200 sewer men should be recruited.

The union had given an ultimatum to MC officials regarding the strike, but getting no response at all, they were left with no option but to stage a protest on Monday. They also threatened to intensify their stir in the coming days if their demands were not fulfilled.

Union leaders had earlier submitted a memorandum of demands to the Finance Minister, Deputy Commissioner, MC Commissioner, Mayor, Chief Engineer of the Sewerage Board.

eachers in Patiala facing police lathicharge

Contractual teachers in Punjab who were recruited in the government schools under central education schemes like the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA) and Rashtriya Madhyamik Siksha Abhiyan (RMSA) have been protesting against the state government’s regularisation policy of over 8000 school teachers. After they faced water cannons and lathi charge by the police, the teachers have now decided to boycott the state’s Padho Punjab Padhaao Punjab project and have said that the boycott will continue until the government changes conditions of regularising the teachers.

The teachers have been protesting against the terms of conditions for regularisation which have been imposed on them. One of the conditions entails that the teachers who are already drawing salaries up to Rs 45,000 per month will now have to settle at a basic income amount of Rs 15,000 per month for three years to get regularised.
