Health workers of Mumbai Corporation struck work on 28th January 2019 in support of their demands. For the past 20 years about four lakh health workers of Brihan Mumbai Corporation have been exploited by denying that they are employees. The Corporation has turned a deaf ear to their demands since 25th January 1999. In 2002, the Industrial Court ruled that these health workers are indeed employees of the Corporation. The latter filed an appeal against this judgment in the High Court. The High Court rejected this appeal. However, since then the Corporation has not paid any heed to this issue. When the health workers went on strike in August 2018, the Chief Minister had promised that the Health Commissioner of the Corporation would be directed to look into the demands of the workers and resolve the outstanding issues. It was in response to this promise that the health workers withdrew their strike and participated wholeheartedly in the Pulse Polio campaign.

The 4000 health workers took up the agitation again on 28th January this year for implementation of the law on Minimum Wages, Maternity Benefits, Provident Fund, etc. They demonstrated in Azad Maidan on 29th January. They also demonstrated in front of Kamgaar Bhavan and discussed the issues with the officials there. While the demands for maternity leave and provident fund were accepted, other specific demands were not addressed. This led the Corporation Health Service Employees Union to declare that they would continue with their agitation until all their demands are met.

Mazdoor Ekta Lehar fully supports the just demands of the health workers of Mumbai Corporation.
