 "Passenger – Motormen Unity Zindabad!"

"An Attack on One is an Attack on All!"

When these slogans reverberated in Churchgate station (Mumbai) on the evening of September 10th, many commuters stopped in their tracks. What was happening? Commuters are used to seeing the motormen blamed by the authorities without a second thought whenever there is an accident. When the motormen of Western Railways, Mumbai went on mass sick leave on August 20th 2012 to press for redressal of their just and long pending demands, the entire bourgeois media portrayed them as irresponsible and attempted to incite the passengers against them.

In this backdrop, to further the cause of the motormen, Lok Raj Sanghathan and Kamgar Ekta Chalwal brought 20 working class and peoples’ organisations  on one platform and brought out a joint leaflet explaining why it is in the interests of passengers to support the motormen. On September 10th 2012, along with 30 motormen, the members of these organizations distributed nearly 10, 000 leaflets at Churchgate station to commuters. Several commuters expressed their shock at the poor working conditions of the motormen of which they had no knowledge. They were appalled to learn of the hazards that the commuters are subjected to on a daily basis when they travel to and fro. Some commuters even joined the slogan shouting.

Earlier, in the month of July 2012, the Lok Raj Sangathan and Kamgar Ekta Chalwal had sent a letter to the Chief Justice of India, as well as to the Railway Board highlighting the demands of the agitating engine drivers and motormen. The letter was signed by more than 25 trade unions and mass organizations representing, banks, insurance, teachers, doctors, bus drivers, Air India pilots, engineering workers, etc.

Mazdoor Ekta Lehar hails these initiatives to build unity between different sections of the working people.
