Lessons from the Martyrs

Dear Sir,

Dear Sir,

I am writing to second the call to the youth published in the  April 1-15, 2013 edition of MEL in the article entitled “Call to the youth: Organize yourselves, become the rulers, and transform society!” that was  published on the occasion marking the 82nd anniversary of the martyrdom of the great heroes Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev (I would like to opine that Rajguru and Sukhdev should also be referred to as Shaheed Rajguru and Shaheed Sukhdev, each of them was no older than 23 at the time of their martyrdom!) In particular, the event gives us an opportunity to reflect on what exactly was their martyrdom about. In particular, the dictionary defines a martyr as “…is somebody who suffers persecution and death for refusing to renounce, or accept, a belief or cause…” In the case of the Shaheeds above, they refused to renounce their belief in need for the liberation of the people of India.

At the time of their martyrdom, in form it meant the liberation from British rule, while in content it meant liberation from the atrocious conditions of life and a better tomorrow. Sadly, 82 years later, for us, the majority of the people of India, this liberation has not been realized. As the article points out, it is true that under the worsening conditions of life due to the intensification of capitalist exploitation, it is indeed the youth that is more marginalized than ever before, and it is indeed their future on which darker clouds gather on a daily basis. The lifes of the Shaheeds teach us that their work is not complete. The youth of today have no choice but to try and change the situation and over throw the chains of capitalism that keeps them bound. Let the youth rally around the slogan of Navnirman and find the path to achieve it. No one would be greater beneficiaries of such Navnirman than the youth itself. But being stakeholders, they will open the doors of liberation of society itself. I thank the CGPI for its important article on this occasion.
