The meeting was addressed by Sitaram Yechury, General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist); D. Raja, General Secretary of the Communist Party of India; Dipankar Bhattacharya, General Secretary of Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist), G. Devarajan, National Secretary of Forward Bloc;   RS Dagar, member of the Central Secretariat of the Revolutionary Socialist Party; and Prakash Rao, Spokesperson of the Communist Ghadar Party of India. The meeting was concluded by CPI(M) Polit Bureau member, Prakash Karat.

Speakers described the atrocities committed by Israel in the course of the genocidal war it has unleashed against the Palestinian people. They called for the implementation of the resolution of the United Nations General Assembly for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire. They condemned the open support provided by the US and its European allies to Israel to carry out war crimes with impunity. Israel is openly violating all UN resolutions, with US backing. US imperialism has stepped up its already colossal financial and military support to Israel. It has deployed two aircraft carriers and other warships to the Mediterranean to threaten the Palestinian and other Arab peoples. It has sent its Special Forces to Israel to coordinate the attacks on the Palestinian people.

The Palestinian Ambassador to India, Adnan Abu Alhaijaa, addressed the meeting. He explained vividly the terrible conditions of the Palestinian people under Israeli occupation. He traced the history of the Palestinian people’s struggles for a homeland from 1948 till today. He noted that the US and its allies have opposed a ceasefire, despite Israel’s actions turning into a genocide against the Palestinians.

Philistin-meeting_7-NovemberSpeakers of the various parties condemned the government of India for refusing to take the stand that the majority of countries of the world have taken, demanding an immediate ceasefire. By abstaining from the vote in the UN General Assembly, the government of India was in effect giving the green signal to Israel to carry on its genocidal war against the Palestinian people. Speakers called upon the government of India to join with the majority of the countries of the world and demand an immediate and unconditional ceasefire. They called upon the government of India to stand with the Palestinian people and fight for the implementation of the numerous resolutions of the UN with respect to the rights of the Palestinian people.

Speakers hailed the massive demonstrations that were taking place world over calling for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire. Even while the governments of the US, Britain, France, Germany etc., are backing Israel to the hilt in its slaughter of the Palestinian people, these demonstrations show that the people of these countries are one with the struggle of the Palestinian people, and want the genocide to end. Like the rest of the world’s peoples, the Indian people too are one with the Palestinian people in their struggle. However, the government of India and various state governments are openly banning any protests against Israel’s genocidal war.
