The temporary workers of Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited have launched an agitation in the form of a hunger strike, following the refusal of the management to accede to the terms of the contract between the two parties. The workers are organized under the banner of Contract Workers Welfare Association.

According to the workers, the contract with the management specified that each time the contract was renewed, the daily wages of workers would have to be increased by 20%. Instead of doing so, the refinery management has lowered the daily wages of contract workers from Rs 295 to Rs 250.
