Contract workers employed by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) organized under the banner of the Delhi Metro Rail Kamgar Union (DMRKU) have protested their termination from June 1 as a result of their contract being ended.

The work of giving tokens by token machine operators is contracted out to different contractors for different sections of the Delhi Metro. When the contract with a particular contractor ends, the workers are dismissed and a new set of workers under a new contractor are hired. The DMRKU is justly demanding that their principal employer is DMRC and the DMRC must make them permanent workers and end the contract system. The workers are demanding that the minimum wages act and other labour laws be implement, and they get all the social security benefits due to permanent workers.
Earlier, on April 29, 2013, the Minister of State for Labour and Employment K Suresh had admitted in parliament that a section of contract workers hired by the Delhi metro were not being paid minimum wages.
