Comrade A. K. Chakraborty passed away on 2 November, 2024 due to a heart attack.
Comrade Chakraborty was born in 1967 in Shrirampur, District Hooghly, in West Bengal. He belonged to a railway working class family. He graduated in science and joined the Indian Railways in 1985 as a booking clerk and later on got promoted as a Guard (now called Train Manager).
Right from his college days and throughout his life, he continued to be influenced by communist ideology. He participated actively in the work of our Party.
He was deeply concerned about the divisions within the communist movement. He was inspired by, and worked for the goal of restoring the unity of communists around the path of revolutionary class struggle. He was convinced that illusions about a parliamentary path to socialism are a roadblock to any advance in this direction.
Comrade Chakraborty played an important role in building the All India Guards Council (AIGC). He was President of the AIGC, Kharagpur Division, South Eastern Railway. He played an active role in the work of organising the working class to oppose the capitalist onslaught of privatisation, liberalisation and globalisation. He contributed to uniting the working class against these onslaughts.
Comrade Chakraborty was one of the victims of the unrelenting drive towards privatisation of the Indian Railways. With restrictions on hiring manpower and in the face of increasing number of trains, tracks, etc., enormous number of vacancies and surrendered posts, the stress faced by railway workers has become huge. The odd working hours, lack of meals at proper times and the lack of sleep took a heavy toll on Comrade Chakraborty. This was one of the reasons for his untimely demise.
With his untimely demise, the railway workers, the working class and the communist movement has lost a precious comrade.
Our Party extends heartfelt condolences to his family.
His memory will live on!
