Farmers are steadfast in their struggle for the demand of MSP.
The agitating farmers, who have been sitting on dharna since 13 February 2024 at Khanauri and Shambhu border between Punjab and Haryana, called for a Punjab bandh on 30 December. Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee Punjab, Bhartiya Kisan Union Ekta Sidhupur, Bhartiya Kisan Union (Krantikari) and the farmers’ organization of Haryana, Bhartiya Kisan Union – Shaheed Bhagat Singh, made all efforts to make the Punjab bandh of 30 December a success. Campaigns were run in every district of Punjab from 27 December for the success of this bandh. Many workers, farmers and traders’ organizations are supporting this campaign.
Farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal has been on a hunger strike since 26 November at Khanauri border, demanding a legal guarantee of MSP and reiterating other demands of the farmers. Despite his deteriorating health, he is sticking to the fast.
In February 2024, the farmers of Punjab had marched towards Delhi to put forward their demands before the central government. But the central government treated the farmers like enemies. The farmers were stopped at Khanauri border and Shambhu border of Haryana and Punjab. Since then the farmers are sitting on dharna at the border and waiting to come into Delhi. The central government has foiled their every attempt to come to Delhi. Nails have been driven into the road, their path has been blocked with large cement slabs and sharp and barbed iron wires, the security forces have been attacking the farmers with lathi, bullets, tear gas etc.
To draw the attention of the government towards their demands, farmers held dharna-demonstrations and rail roko aandolan at about 100 places in Punjab on 18 December 2024. Trains were stopped for 3 hours at railway stations like Moga, Faridkot, Ferozepur, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Batala, Kadiyan, Phillaur, Tanda, Dasuha, Hoshiarpur, Ludhiana, Bathinda, Barnala, Sirhind, Pathankot, Shambhu etc. Farmer women also participated in this in large numbers. They confirmed that they would not back down until the central government meets their demands. “We will continue to struggle with our farmer brothers” are their words.

It is known that in 2020, farmers had protested for 13 months on the borders of Delhi. Despite great difficulties, farmers continued the movement for the withdrawal of the three agricultural laws imposed by the Central Government and many other demands including legal guarantee of MSP, loan waiver, withdrawal of increase in electricity rates, cancellation of police cases registered against agitating farmers, justice for farmers martyred in Lakhimpur Kheri, etc. This movement was withdrawn on the assurance of the central government that these demands would be accepted. But the central government has been continuously refusing to accept those demands. Therefore, the farmers have decided to intensify their campaign again.
