US backed regime change in Syria

The fall of the Assad government in Syria is not the result of a popular uprising, as is being portrayed in the western imperialist media. It has been brought about by armed gangs backed by the US imperialists. It is well known that the CIA and MOSSAD, the intelligence agencies of the US and Israel respectively, have been providing weapons, training and huge amounts of money to several so-called rebel groups in Syria, including the group known as Hayát Tahrir al Sham.

The US has conducted air strikes and continues to occupy the oil-producing regions of Syria with about 2000 troops. American troops are also occupying the wheat producing regions, considered the bread basket of Syria. They have started building a military base in the city of Kobani.

Israel is mercilessly bombing Syria. It has not only occupied the Golan Heights but has also seized large tracts of land in southern Syria. With the backing of the US, it is striving to turn the region into a “Greater Israel”, by destroying Palestine, Lebanon and Syria and forcing the contiguous Arab countries to comply with their plans.

Turkiye has moved its troops into the area formerly considered a buffer zone in the north.

The nation of Syria is being wrecked and its territory is being carved up by the US, Israel and other external aggressors.

Since 2001, the US imperialists have had a plan to wreck seven countries in the oil rich regions of West Asia and North Africa – namely, Iraq, Libya, Lebanon, Syria, Somalia, Sudan, and finally, Iran. This was revealed in 2007 during an interview by former US General Wesley Clark. The invasion of Iraq took place in 2003, and the bombing of Somalia began in 2007. In 2008, the US and its allies orchestrated the so-called “Arab Spring” events, staging public demonstrations to topple the governments in Tunisia and Egypt.  Libya was wrecked during 2015 to 2019.

American attempts to topple the Assad government in Syria have been going on since 2011, with the CIA training and arming thousands of armed fighters. A turning point came in 2015 when Russia extended air support to the Assad government, which allowed it to reclaim large parts of the country.  The US and its allies continued to inflict severe damage by imposing harsh economic sanctions on Syria, which crippled its economy and created extreme hardship for the population, as testified to by the report of the UN Special Rapporteur in 2022.

Syria has been the target of American economic sanctions and external aggression for so long that its infrastructure is largely destroyed. The people of Syria have been terribly impoverished. Similar to Libya, Syria had one of the higher standards of living in the region prior to the criminal plans of the US to carry out regime change.

The spokesmen of US imperialism claim that they support a “Syrian-led and Syrian-owned political transition”. This is a blatant lie. The US imperialists do not respect the right to self-determination of the Syrian people or of any other nation or people.

One of the aims of the US backed regime change in Syria is to weaken the positions of Iran and all those who are resisting the genocidal war against the Palestinian people. It is part of a plan to divide Arab countries into several small weak states which will submit to the regional hegemony of Israel.

The US has been carrying out all its wrecking activities in West Asia and North Africa under the signboard of a so-called War on Terror. However, all available facts have by now exposed the reality that the US imperialists are the biggest sponsors of terrorist groups. They have armed and funded numerous such groups in order to brutally interfere in other countries, incite civil war and carry out regime change. They arbitrarily brand some groups as being terrorists and others as being “rebel groups”, to suit their own narrow interest. They even claim that some group they had labelled terrorist before has now changed its character and become freedom fighters.

The U.S. representative to the United Nations has called on the Security Council to demand that all parties in Syria must “adhere to international law”. This has no credibility whatsoever, given that American troops are illegally occupying Syria in violation of international law and that the US is supporting the genocide in Gaza, which is against every law the international community of nations has ever enacted.
