We have reported in Mazdoor Ekta Lehar of the mass protests in December of tens of thousands of garment workers of Bangladesh for better wages.

Following these protests, the capitalists and government of Bangladesh have been extremely active in targeting trade union activists. According to reports, the military intelligence of Bangladesh is behind the arrest of trade union activist Moshrefa Mishu. Moshrefa is a political activist and President of the Garment Workers Unity Forum (GWUF). She has been confined to Dhaka Medical Hospital under the eyes of highly armed police forces.

According to reports, Moshrefa was first threatened through the cell phone in July 2010 that she would be eliminated in a "cross fire", if she did not stop organizing the garment workers or demand the raising of their wages. On the night of December 14, armed forces came to her house and arrested her without warrant. Since then, she has been under one form of detention or other, for over a month. Her family is facing persecution and there is fear that she will be killed.

"Mazdoor Ekta Lehar condemns the persecution of Moshrefa and others who are organizing and fighting for the rights of workers in Bangladesh."
