Without wages for several weeks, a large number of the migrant workers have left for their native towns as they cannot afford the high cost of rent for accommodation. The last wage settlement was carried out three years ago. The workers unions were demanding a wage hike to compensate for the steep price increases. However the manufacturers are citing a diminishing market as a result of increasing use of fibre glass and plastic vessels to justify very small increase in wages.
