Hundreds of workers are on strike in the Wazirpur Industrial Area of Delhi. These are workers of hot rolling mills, and have been on strike with the demand for better working conditions and implementation of labour laws.

Hot Rolling Mill Workers’ Unity Committee has been in the leadership of the strike, so far. Workers from around 23 factories have been determinedly fighting for the fulfillment of their demands. These workers have to work for 12-15 hours in dangerous conditions in front of a furnace. The iron is melted and transformed into stainless steel. Workers in these factories are not assured of even their minimum wage, Provident Fund, ESI and such basic rights. This, despite the fact, that there is a labour court right next door in Nimdi Colony.

Workers have to work in intolerable conditions in front of the furnace without any protective equipment whatsoever. They are paid no compensation if they get injured in an accident in the course of their work.

Workers from other factories of Wazirpur have joined in strike actions and protest rallies in support of the hot rolling factory workers. Activists of several workers’ organisations are joining in support of the protest actions. Mazdoor Ekta Lehar supports the just demands of the hot rolling mill workers of Wazirpur.
