Construction workers strike work all across the country

More than 7 lakh construction workers struck work as part of an All-India strike on December 8, 2009. The strike was observed in175 districts of 19 states and in more than 50 big construction projects. The strike was called by the Construction Workers Federation of India(CWFI).

More than 7 lakh construction workers struck work as part of an All-India strike on December 8, 2009. The strike was observed in175 districts of 19 states and in more than 50 big construction projects. The strike was called by the Construction Workers Federation of India(CWFI).

In six districts of Himachal Pradesh in all the 15 Hydro-Electric Projects construction work was totally stopped. All the workers came out of the Projects and held meetings.

More than 50,000 construction workers in 11 districts in Punjab joined the strike. Self employed migrant workers in Punjab took a lead in making the strike a success.

In Rajasthan the strike took place in 5 big construction projects.

Both project workers and self employed construction workers in 16 districts of Assam participated in the strike.

Lakhs of workers participated in the strike in Andhra Pradesh, Tamilnadu, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Tripura, Haryana, Delhi, Orissa, Jammu & Kashmir and Manipur.

The workers demanded that the Construction Workers Welfare Scheme be implemented in the states.
