Contract workers in a steel making plant in Sanguem taluka in Goa began an indefinite strike on April 5, 2011. Over 250 workers gathered outside the factory gates shouting slogans against the management. The striking workers are demanding better working conditions.
"We are made to work for up to 12 hours a day, and get paid a meagre Rs 135 as daily wages," the workers pointed out. "We were assured regularization of services after working on a contract basis for a certain period. However, even after toiling for over 10 years, we have not been given any service benefits by the company," one of the leaders of the striking workers pointed out.
"We have been demanding that our wages be hiked and that our services be regularized. If the company management fails to heed to our demands, we will come out on the streets with other villagers and agitate," the workers declare. The local panchayat is supporting the workers struggle.
