MGNREGA workers rally against low wages

2,000 MGNREGA workers staged a rally in Jaipur on June 24, 2010 over poor payments under the rural employment guarantee scheme.

According to the state’s MGNREGA website, the average payment of workers of this scheme which was Rs 89 per day last year has now fallen to Rs 70 per day. “This is a clear indication of the state government’s dual attitude. On one hand while it has been increasing the salaries of MLAs and government staff, there has been no initiative by it to cater to the poor. It is an anti-poor government,” said an activist of the Suchna Evum Rozgar Adhikar Abhiyan.

According to reports, at certain places in Rajasthan, workers are just being paid Rs 10 or Rs 20 as wages for MGNREGA. It may be recalled that the Congress government in its manifesto in 2008 had pledged to increase the minimum wages from Rs 100 to Rs 125 if voted to power.
