13,000 contract workers of Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC) began an indefinite strike on September 19, 2010 demanding pay parity with permanent workers and absorption as regular workers.
A contract worker at the Public Sector NLC gets between Rs 3,000 and Rs 4,500 a month. This is a fraction of what the regular workers get, for more or less the same work. Moreover, in 2008, the NLC management had agreed to absorb at least 5,000 contract workers as regular workers. The Management has reneged on this agreement, forcing the workers to strike work. The striking workers belong to the Labour Progressive Front, the Pattali Thozhil Sangam and NLC Jeeva Contract Workers Union.
