More than 30,000 Romanian public sector workers are to go on strike at the end of September 2010. The spokesman of the National Union of Public Workers said that workers from hundreds of state institutions will participate.

The government slashed public sector wages by 25 percent in July to meet the conditions of a $25 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, and the European Union. Romania’s economy is expected to officially shrink by more than 1 percent this year, after it declined by 7.1 percent in 2009. Thus it is clear that the government is trying to make the workers bear the brunt of the crisis in the economy.
