Indonesia : Mining workers’ struggle

Over 1,500 workers at the Batu Hijau gold and copper mine on Sumbawa Island, Indonesia are on strike since August 1, 2010 demanding overtime  and improved working conditions.  

Over 1,500 workers at the Batu Hijau gold and copper mine on Sumbawa Island, Indonesia are on strike since August 1, 2010 demanding overtime  and improved working conditions.  

The Newmont Mining Corporation (NMC) which owns this mine, employs over 7000 workers across many countries and the Indonesian unit is its largest gold producing mine. Instead of paying the overtime amounting to about 14.1 million US $ for the two year period June 2008 to June 2010, the management has threatened legal action.
