The Trade Union Coordination Committee, representing the nearly 4,000 private sector workers serving the Cochin Port Trust, has served a notice of strike from August 11.

The coordination committee is demanding that their jobs should be protected once container operations are shifted to the new International Container Transhipment Terminal site on Vallarpadam later this year. The trade unions have also said that the operations of Rajiv Gandhi Container Terminal, belonging to Cochin Port Trust, should continue after the container operations migrate to Vallarpadam. One of the concerns raised by the trade union combine is the safety of the jobs of those working with India Gateway Terminals (IGTPL) at the Rajiv Gandhi Terminal now.
