About 1,500 workers of a Steel factory in Kharagpur, West Bengal, blocked the National Highway on November 21, 2010, after the management put up a notice announcing suspension of work in the plant. All vehicular movement on the National Highway came to a standstill for 5 hours until the government announced a tripartite meeting of the management, the labour ministry and the workers over the issue.
According to the workers, there has been no production in the plant for over 8 months. Management was smuggling out machine parts out of the factory, workers were not receiving any wages. In these conditions, the workers gheraoed top officials on November 8, 2010 till midnight. The undeclared lockout by the management and the road blockade by workers are a sequel to this ongoing struggle.
