Five lakh Bank employees will participate in the all India General strike of September 7, 2010. This has been announced by the leaders of the All-India Bank Employees' Association (AIBEA).
According to the AIBEA, many recommendations of the Khandelwal Committee report are against the interests of employees and officers of the banking industry. The union has opposed all negative recommendations of the report. It has criticised the suggestion made in the report to phase out permanent jobs such as those of clerks, and came down heavily on the practice of hiring staff on contract basis.
Although officers were not yet employed on contract, the lower level employees of banks, especially in the private sector, were being recruited on contract basis, the Union declared.
