According to the domestic workers' organisations, At the International Labour Conference in June, India did not support the ILO convention on domestic workers. The Indian government representative declared that domestic workers in India did not face any problems. This was a big lie. According to the Supreme Court, domestic workers should be given a minimum wage of Rs 30 per hour, but in fact domestic helps are paid only Rs 300-400 a month.

The protest was organised under the banner of the Tamilnadu Domestic Workers Federation. Similar protests demanding rights and a special law for domestic workers took place simultaneously in 13 cities, including Tiruchi, Villupuarm, Thanjavur, Salem, Madurai and Theni.
