May Day 2011, Gorakhopur, Bihar, IndiaWorkers of Ankur Udyog Ltd, a factory in the Bargadwa industrial area of Gorakhpur, were attacked by hired goondas of the management on May 3, 2011. The attack was organized by the factory owner to "teach the workers a lesson" for participating in a May Day rally. The capitalists association of Gorakhpur was incensed with the large scale participation of workers in the May Day rally in defiance of the dictate of the capitalists.

The capitalist of Ankur Udyog suspended 18 workers. When the workers protested this, the hired goons fired on the workers, injuring at least 17 of them. The workers then cornered the goons in the factory premises, but the police later came and rescued these goons from the wrath of the workers and set the goons free. The capitalist association is closely connected with the notorious MP of Gorakhpur, Yogi Adityanath, who controls the entire administration in the area as his fiefdom.

The MP has openly backed the capitalists, calling the workers "Maoists". The commissioner of Gorakhpur issued a statement that "outside elements instigating the workers will not be spared and te police will take strictest action against them".

Earlier, the workers of Gorakhpur had paralysed the district administration of Gorakhpur for 4 days in 2009, protesting against the arrest of their leaders.

The workers of Gorakhpur have defied the administrations ban on protests and have decided to sit on satyagraha from May 8, 2011.
