8000 operational staff of the cargo handling agents (CHA) at Sahar Cargo Complex (SCC) in Mumbai went on a flash 24 hour strike on May 26, 2011. The workers were protesting lack of proper infrastructure as well as increasing corruption.

The strike was withdrawn the next day after negotiations with Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), the private corporation which has been handed over the Airport in Mumbai.

MIAL took over Mumbai Airport in 2006. There has been a 300% increase in both export and import cargo since then. However the storage capacity remains the same as it was in 1999-2000 and the infrastructure is extremely poor.

The workers are overworked and have to work till 2am to 3am to clear the consignments. Trucks with export consignments have to pay a bribe of Rs 1,500 to 2,000 to enter the cargo on a priority basis.
