Origin of May Day

The origin of May Day is closely linked with the struggle for the shorter workday – a demand of major political significance for the working class. This struggle started almost from the beginning of the factory system in Britain, the US and European countries. Workers were resisting the long workday of 14-16-18 hours. The 1820s and 1830s were full of strikes for a reduction of work hours.

Massive opposition to 12 hour working day:
Tamilnadu government forced to put on hold Amendment extending factory working hours

While the militant opposition by workers in Tamilnadu has succeeded in forcing the government to put a hold on implementing the anti-worker amendments, the fact remains that the Amendment has not been withdrawn. Workers have to be vigilant about the fact that the government will try different methods to put the amendments into effect. The stay on the amendment in no way means that the government has changed its aim, which remains that of enabling the Indian and foreign capitalists to make bigger profits out of increased exploitation of the workers.

Production Linked Scheme – loot of public money for enriching monopoly capitalists

The PLI is nothing but a handout of public money for ensuring maximum profits for monopoly capitalists in the name of building ‘Atmnirbhar Bharat’. The profits of the biggest monopolies are guaranteed under the schemes, but fulfilment of stated objectives such as employment generation are not – they remain policy objectives.  We have seen again and again that putting public money into the pockets of the monopoly capitalists is called “incentive”, while transfers to working people are called “freebies”.

Conference on problems facing the peasantry of Tamilnadu:
Resolves to strengthen the fighting unity of the peasants in defence of their rights

A Conference was held at Ammapettai, near Thanjavur in Tamilnadu to discuss problems faced by peasants and the way forward. It discussed burning issues facing the peasants, including problem of lack of water for irrigation of crops in the dry regions, the absence of a assured Minimum Support Price for all crops, and the absence of storage and other infrastructure facilities.
