Peasants in Acute Distress

The condition of peasants is growing from bad to worse in all parts of the country. Growing domination of capitalist monopolies, withdrawal of State support in the name of liberalisation, and the cash crunch created by the Note Ban have all added to the misery of the peasants. The following are some cases which have hit the news in recent weeks.

Who benefits from the rise in vegetable prices?

In the year that has gone by, one of the biggest burdens on the masses of working people has been the sharp and continuous rise in prices of vegetables. This added to the burden the people were already facing because of the rise in the prices of a whole host of other essential commodities. The rise in prices was particularly severe in the case of onions, and also potatoes and tomatoes.

People’s opposition to nuclear projects is growing across the country. Thousands of peasants in Gorakhpur village and surrounding areas of Fatehabad district of Haryana are also militantly opposing a nuclear electricity project being planned in this village. The government shamelessly declared that the land in the area is infertile.

Crisis of capitalism deepens further in Greece

Greece has been under severe economic crisis for the past several years. The Greek government which did not have any foreign debt before it joined the EU in 2000, is now mired in debt. By 2009, the budget deficit stood at 15.7%, which is four times what is allowed by the EU and the external debt was 127% of the GDP. The primary reason for this situation was the easy credit offered to the Greek government by the "troika" of lending institutions, i.e., the IMF, European Central Bank and the European Commission.

The UPA Government, which recently completed the first year of its second avatar, has claimed to be a government serving the aam aadmi. It pretends to be greatly concerned about the poor peasants in the villages. However life reveals the opposite.
