Workers in Tamilnadu vigourously celebrate May Day

The First of May, 2023 marked the centenary of the first ever May Day celebration in India. Exactly a hundred years ago, workers hoisted the red flag in Chennai (then known as Madras). May Day this year therefore assumed great significance for workers. It marks a century of united struggle of the working class of India for its rights, first against the colonial rulers, and since independence, against the Indian ruling class.

US military exercises in the Korean Peninsula:
The US is stepping up its preparations for war in Asia

A massive military exercise involving the armed forces of the US and South Korea has been launched in the Korean Peninsula.  These exercises are being conducted on land, sea and air. The target of these exercises is North Korea, also known as the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK). The exercises in March and April this year are one of the largest in many years.

Air India pilots oppose new working conditions

The two unions of the pilots of Air India, the Indian Commercial Pilots Association (ICPA) and Indian Pilots Guild (IPG) have opposed the new wage structure and the terms and conditions of work being imposed on them by the Tata Group management. They have threatened to go on strike if they are forced to sign the new work-contract agreement, which they have called ‘draconian’.

Origin of May Day

The origin of May Day is closely linked with the struggle for the shorter workday – a demand of major political significance for the working class. This struggle started almost from the beginning of the factory system in Britain, the US and European countries. Workers were resisting the long workday of 14-16-18 hours. The 1820s and 1830s were full of strikes for a reduction of work hours.
