The statement of the CC of the CGPI dated 28th November 2014 issued to mark the 22nd anniversary of the demolition of the Babri Masjid carries the by line `Unite to establish a new state that ensures prosperity and protection for all!’. The statement points out a very important feature that was to forever change the face of the Indian polity, which was the move by the ruling class to change its tactics as far as smashing the unity of the people of India by creating a communal conflagration on an unparalleled scale since the country gained independence from British rule in 1947.
This event came in 1992 only 8 years after the anti-Sikh pogrom organized by the Congress in 1984. In 1992, after several years of preparation all the major political parties and organs of the state conspired, first by creating a massive propaganda about Babri Masjid and eventually organized its destruction. Meticulous planning also went to organizing riots to follow that event in which countless innocent lives were lost. Such events cannot take place without a mastermind and in this case, it is clearly the big bourgeoisie that sought to impose a fascist regime on the country as it sought to integrate itself into the capitalist-imperialist system of the world and to make an attempt to emerge as a big player. Knowing very well that this could only be done at the expense of the working peoples, it was in its own interest to keep the people of India divided on communal lines. Furthermore, this ushered in an era where the state continued to arm itself with untrammelled powers. Any one perceived as a threat could be locked away as a terrorist, or an agent of an external power or as a trouble maker.
Events such as the destruction of the Babri Masjid represent moments when the ruling classes find that they are unable to carry on in the old way and require new ways to stay in power. Such Machiavellian tactics have been perfected by the Indian state which is a legatee of the colonial state and which today is the state of the big bourgeoisie. Nevertheless, in the face of this, its dialectical opposite is coming into being.
The people of India stand opposed to this rule and require new institutions to serve their own interests so that they may lead a human existence. Fundamental to this to recognize that all the people of India are the legatees of its riches and wealth and of the products of the labour of its people, and not just the bourgeoisie. The people of India need a new political theory which is free of the colonial legacy and of the oriental conception of history. The people of India need the confidence that they can rule themselves, and that they are not the burden of the white man or of anyone else. The people of India are not savages who need to be policed. The people of India are waiting for the day when they will be free. The path to this will be the one where a new state would be founded on modern democratic foundations, which will ensure prosperity and protection for all. I am writing to second the call of the CC of the CGPI in this regard.
