Kashmir government workers' protest attacked

On July 14, 2011, thousands of state government employees of the Jammu and Kashmir government staged a protest demonstration responding to the call of the Joint Action Committee (JCC) in Srinagar demanding release of pending arrears of the Sixth Pay Commission, regularization of dailywagers, enhancement of retirement age from 58 to 60 and enhancement in wages of Anganwadi workers.

The JCC had announced “Secretariat Gherao” and threatened to intensify the agitation if the demands of the employees were not met immediately.

As is the trend in Kashmir, the police launched a brutal attack on this protest. More than hundred employees, including their leaders, were detained and nearly a dozen others injured in the police action. Some of the seriously injured employees were shifted to SK Institute of Medical Sciences Soura.

The JCC leader and Employees Joint Action Committee (K) chairman, Khurshid Alam said “Government should not take five lakh employees far granted. It can be disastrous for the government,” he warned.

A minister of the J&K government Taj Mohi-ud-Din said that state government was not in a position to fulfill the demands of employees. “We have sent the proposal to the central government and we are waiting for it. We cannot give false hope to the employees and unless the central government supports the state, we will not be able to pay the arrears,”.

Asked why police used force against the employees, he said, “We cannot allow anybody to disrupt peace in Kashmir as the tourist season is at its peak".

and privatisation. The truth is thatthere IS an alternative.

The alternative is to reorient the economy to fulfil people’s
needs instead of fulfilling capitalist greed. This is the
