Annual meeting of Sanjay Colony’s Lok Raj Samiti

Develop the Lok Raj Samitis as organs of people’s power

The annual public meeting of the Lok Raj Samiti of Sanjay Colony, located in the Okhla Industrial Area of South Delhi, was held on February 19, 2012. Apart from the resident members, the members of the Lok Raj Samitis from the neighbouring areas were invited as observers.

The Samiti had been making preparations since a whole month for this meeting. During this period the Samiti carried out the work of collecting funds, making members, preparing cultural presentations and putting up posters. Nominations for the new Samiti were also invited.

The meeting venue was decorated with inspiring slogans – “Make food and essential articles available at affordable prices!” “Put an end to the hegemony and stranglehold of political parties on the electoral process!” “People should have the right to recall their representatives!” “People should have the right to initiate legislation!” “We are the masters; we are Hindostan, workers, peasants, women and youth!” “We are united against any attempt to displace us from our homes!” “We will ourselves determine our road to development!” On the other side, there was a display of photos giving glimpses of the Samiti’s work during the previous year.

The meeting began with revolutionary Bhojpuri songs. The meeting was presided over by Shri. Raghavan, President of the All-India Council and Com. Bijju Nayak, Secretary of the Delhi Council of LRS

Ashok Kumar, Secretary of the LRS Samiti presented a report of the work of the Sangathan over the year. He said, “I could not have believed that, after a whole day’s back-breaking work to earn our livelihood, we would be able to find time to carry on with the struggle for our rights. But we have been successful. We have come out on the streets throughout this year for water, sanitation and other fundamental rights.”

Following the presentation of the report, several members including R.K.Gautam, Meera Devi, Vinod Kumar, Hari Om and Sachin expressed their views on the report. Then, the report was unanimously adopted by the membership.

This was followed by the election to the Secretariat. The proposed Secretaries for Education, Food, Water, Women, Law, Culture and the Block Secretary were called to the stage.

Addressing the meeting, Shri. Raghavan praised the work of the Samiti and said that this is a genuine democratic process. This empowers the people to make decisions, he pointed out.

Bhojpuri singers mesmerized the meeting with their many folk songs. Children performed a play based on a revolutionary song.

The meeting concluded with a vow to intensify the struggles for rights.
