Rajasthan teachers intensify struggle

On 10th September, all the teachers’ organisations of Rajasthan came together to burn effigies of Education Minister Kalicharan Saraf, Panchayatraj Minister Gulab Chand Kataria and Additional Chief Secretary, Shyam S Agrawal for expressing views insulting to teachers.

Prior to this on Teachers day on 5th September, Education Minister Kalicharan Saraf, Panchayatraj Minister Gulab Chand Katariaand Additional Chief Secretary, Shyam S Agrawal insulted the teachers by their indecent comments. The Ministers were holding the teachers responsible for the bad state of the education system.

All the teachers of Rajasthan are very upset with their indecent remarks and all organisations have started united agitation.

Various organisations like the Sanyukt Shikshak Sangharsh Samiti, Rajasthan Shikshak-Shiksha adhikari Sangharsh Samiti, Shikshak Sangh (Shekhavat) and Rajasthan Shikshak Sangh (Pragatisheel) have strongly condemned the observations of the Ministers and the Chief Secretary. These organisations have demanded that all these people should be immediately dismissed from their posts.

The teachers’ associations of Rajasthan have been continuously struggling to oppose the anti-people changes that the Rajasthan government is bringing about. This is the reason why the government is incensed. Last month the government announced that it will close down 17129 primary schools. The teachers associations are unitedly opposing this decision of the government because at least a lakh children will be affected by this decision of the government and their future will be jeopardised.

According to the decision of Education department, 17129 primary schools of the state will be integrated with 13,565 higher secondary schools. There are many more primary schools than higher secondary schools. By closing down primary schools, the distance of the schools will increase for children coming from villages. Schools with fewer than 30 registered students will be closed down. This will affect 50,000 teachers. Instead of recruiting teachers for the vacant posts and eliminating the shortage of teachers, the government is trying to eliminate the posts in the name of integration even though all the organisations of the teachers have opposed the integration scheme.
