Successful Convention of Trade Unions in South Delhi

A convention of various trade unions in the South Delhi area was organised on 17th July 2016 as part of the preparatory work towards making the 2nd September general strike a success. AITUC, CITU, INTUC, AIUTUC, General Mazdoor Trade Union, Delhi Plumbers Association, Allied Industrial Workers Union, Press Karmachari Mazdoor Union, Delhi Construction Workers Union, Indian Steel and Metal Workers Union, representatives of several other unions and workers participated with Mazdoor Ekta Committee in the Convention.

It should be noted that at the All-India Convention on 10th March 2016, trade unions decided to call for a general strike on 2nd September in support of the demands of the working class against the government’s anti-worker, anti-peasant, anti-national and anti-people policies.

Addressing the Convention on behalf of Mazdoor Ekta Committee Com Santosh Kumar said that workers across the country were preparing for the success of the general strike. We organised a very successful strike on 2nd September last year – a remarkable demonstration the united strength of the workers. Whether it be the UPA-led Congress government or the BJP-led NDA, all governments have implemented the same policies. Exploitation of workers is being intensified across the country to benefit the capitalists. Permission has been given for entry of 100% FDI in several sectors. This will lead to further intensification of workers’ exploitation. Small traders are vulnerable to closures. The Defence Sector has also been opened to FDI. Public Sector banks and insurance companies are being privatised. Capital will always be invested in those sectors where there is potential for maximum profit. Foreign investment will flow into India when there is expectation of maximum profit from that, and the government is amending its laws to enable this. The government’s claim that there is a deficit of capital in India is totally false. Indian capitalists have invested at least Rs.18 lakh crores abroad.

This state works in the interests of monopoly capitalists. Today, just 150 capitalist houses are ruling over 125 crore Indians. It is the same situation as when 50,000 British ruled over 30 crore Indians. Whose interests does this state serve? The political parties are merely the managers of the capitalists. All laws are made to protect the interests of the capitalists. There is absolutely no concern shown in Parliament for the demands of the workers.

It will be a big victory for us when the workers of India would understand this. We have to become very conscious, organise to make the working class take over the political reins and masters of this country. We have to fight like the ghadrites of 1857, the Ghadar Party of 1913 and revolutionaries like Bhagat Singh. It would be a betrayal to rely on these parties of the bourgeoisie.

In conclusion, Com. Santosh Kumar said that the 2015 successful general strike became an example for workers all over the world. We have to decide that we will once again ensure a successful general strike.

Several others addressed the Convention and expressed their commitment to making the 2nd September general strike a success. Com Pramod Rajput of AITUC, Com.J.P Dube of CITU, Com Ramji Singh of AIUTUC, Ahmed Hasan of INTUC and Com. Jagdish of AIFTU were among the speakers. Everyone of them emphasised the need to organise workers in his area for the success of the strike.

Com. Asghar Ali of AITUC presided over the convention and Com. Birju Nayak of Mazdoor Ekta Committee concluded the meeting.

Parties of the capitalist class claim that there is no
alternative to the program of globalisation, liberalisation
and privatisation. The truth is thatthere IS an alternative.

The alternative is to reorient the economy to fulfil people’s
needs instead of fulfilling capitalist greed. This is the
program for the Navnirman of India.
