US decides to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital:

A grave provocation against the Palestinian and Arab peoples

US president Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and start preparations for the US to move its embassy there from Tel Aviv constitutes a grave provocation against the Palestinian people. It is a deliberate move designed to further inflame tensions across West Asia.

Jerusalem is considered a holy city by believers of three religions – Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Following the end of the First World War, the League of Nations handed over Palestine to the British imperialists as part of the redivision of the territories of the former toman Empire. Following the end of the Second World War, the United Nations decided to partition Palestine and create two states — Israel and Palestine. Jerusalem was to have the status of a ‘separated body’ administered by the UN.

The city of Jerusalem is illegally occupied by Israel. Immediately following the creation of the state of Israel on May 14, 1948, Israel launched a savage war on the Palestinian people to expand its territory. In the ten month war, Israel occupied the West part of the city of Jerusalem as well as territories belonging to the Palestinian people. Lakhs of Palestinians were thrown out of their homeland and turned into refugees. The remaining Palestinian territories as well as the east of Jerusalem were incorporated into the Kingdom of Jordan.

In the June 1967 Six Day War, Israel captured and annexed the east zone of Jerusalem, as also the West Bank. In 1980, it introduced and passed a law declaring Jerusalem as the capital of the state of Israel. This law was declared void by the UN Resolution 478. Officially, the UN does not recognize Israeli sovereignty over the entire city, home to sites holy to the Muslim, Jewish and Christian religions.

Thus, officially, the status of Jerusalem is in suspended animation. Israel’s law is not applicable, but the international status proposed by the UN has also not been implemented. Tel Aviv remains Israel’s internationally accepted capital, but the seat of the country’s government is at Jerusalem.

No other country has its embassy in Jerusalem.

The state of Israel was created through armed aggression, massacres, ethnic cleansing and cruel displacement of nearly 750,000 Palestinian people from their homeland. It continues to follow the same anti Palestinian anti-Arab policy, and denies the Palestinian people their own homeland. US imperialism, in pursuit of its strategic aim of domination of West Asia, has armed the Israeli state to its teeth to serve as its strategic ally in West Asia. Together they have ensured that the Palestinian people are denied their national rights.

Worldwide opposition

Trump’s announcement has been met with widespread opposition by the Palestinian and Arab people as well as people all over the world. The Palestinians are justifiably concerned that any US move to arbitrarily alter the status quo could mean abrogation of all Palestinian-Israeli accords.

UN resolution rejects Trump move to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital

On December 21, 2017, of the 172 countries that voted, a total of 128 countries voted in favor of a United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) resolution calling for the United States to drop its recent recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital and its plans to move the US embassy there. 9 countries voted against and 35 abstained.

This reveals the growing isolation of the US among other countries of the world, whose peoples want a just and principled solution to the Palestinian people’s demand for restoration of their homeland. It reveals the deep resentment of people of all countries against US imperialism’s attempts to extend its hegemony and its aggressive interference in the affairs of other countries.

A day before the resolution was tabled in the UNGA, Trump had threatened to cut off financial aid to countries that voted in favor of the resolution. "All these nations that take our money and then vote against us at the Security Council or the Assembly, they take hundreds of millions of dollars and billions of dollars and they vote against us," Trump said. "Well, we're watching those votes. Let them vote against us, we'll save a lot. We don't care."

This shows the utter arrogance of US imperialism, its open declaration of how it uses the power of the dollar to arm-twist other countries to support its aggressive and warmongering activities all over the world. It once again brings out the utter disregard of US imperialism for the sovereignty and rights of other nations and peoples.

Protest demonstrations of Palestinians throughout the West Bank and Gaza have been brutally attacked by the Israeli security forces. Huge protest demonstration have also been reported in Jordan, Turkey, Tunisia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, Iran, Algeria, Lebanon, Canada, US and many other countries as well as in India.

Palestinian President Abbas has warned of the “dangerous consequences such a decision would have to the peace process and to the peace, security and stability of the region and of the world”. The king of Jordan, the Egyptian President, the Turkish President, state spokespersons of Iran and Syria, Germany and the European Union, leaders of Hamas and the Arab League, the UN Secretary General and many other world leaders have condemned the US president’s announcement as a grave threat to peace and security in the region.

Meeting to condemn US decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital

Jamal e Islami Hindi meeting in DelhiThe Jamaat-e-Islami Hind organized a public meeting at the Press Club in New Delhi on December 21, to condemn US president Trump’s recent announcement recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and his plans to move the US embassy there. Activists of Lok Raj Sangathan and various political parties and mass organisations working in defence of the rights of the people participated in the meeting.

Leaders of the participating organisations as well as former diplomats and others addressed the meeting.

Speakers unanimously condemned the US decision as a unilateral, blatant violation of the internationally accepted position on the issue. The US decision poses a grave threat to peace and security in the region, they observed. With great anger, they reminded the audience of the history of the creation of Israel and the negation of the national rights of the Palestinian people, the brutal aggression and occupation, military attacks and genocide carried out by Israel -- armed to the teeth by US -- and the grave historical injustice to the Palestinian people. Speakers also cautioned the audience about the growing military and strategic alliance of the Indian state with the Israeli state, which poses dangers to peace in our region. They called for united resistance to the US move.

Various protest actions planned in different parts of the country in the coming days were announced, with a call to all to participate in large numbers.

The UN Security Council is reported to be considering a draft resolution that “affirms that any decisions and actions which purport to have altered the character, status or demographic composition of the Holy City of Jerusalem have no legal effect, are null and void and must be rescinded in compliance with relevant resolutions of the Security Council.” It calls upon all countries to refrain from establishing diplomatic missions in Jerusalem. While the draft resolution enjoys wide support, it is likely to be vetoed by the US.

The Communist Ghadar Party of India condemns the unilateral decision of the US state to shift the capital of Israel to Jerusalem. The illegal occupation and annexation of the Palestinian people’s homeland, their forcible displacement and the brutal terror unleashed upon them by the Israeli state and its US imperialist backers must be opposed by all freedom loving people.

Call of the Central Committee of Communist Ghadar Party of India, 30th August, 2012

Working class representatives from all over the country are gathering on 4th September, at a time when a titanic struggle is going on in our country. The struggle is between the majority of toiling and exploited people and a minority of exploiters. It is between the majority whose labour expands wealth and the minority who enjoy the fruits of wealth creation on the basis of their private property and positions of power.
