Land acquisition – in the interest of monopoly capitalists

Massive struggles of peasants and tribal peoples all over India against forcible acquisition of their lands had forced the Congress-led UPA government to repeal the colonial Land Acquisition Act and replace it with a new Act in 2013. This new act was not acceptable to the big capitalists who are eager to expedite the process of acquiring land for their profitable projects. Repeated efforts by the BJP-led NDA government to change the 2013 Act, in favour of the big capitalists, have so far failed in the face of the united resistance of peasants and workers.

In this situation, the Central government has ensured that various state governments amend state level land acquisition laws to enable them to forcibly acquire peasants' land in the name of “public purpose”. State governments of Gujarat, Tamilnadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telengana and Jharkhand have carried out such amendments to forcibly acquire peasants’ lands to build highways, “smart cities”, etc.

The Forest Rights Act which was passed following years of struggles of adivasis and forest dwellers is being openly violated. Peasants and adivasis in Jharkhand and other mineral rich states are being uprooted from their lands, to enable the big capitalists to establish coal mines and exploit the rich mineral resources of these states.

Massive struggles of peasantry and adivasis have broken out against this forcible acquisition of their lands in the name of “development”. Peasants and adivasis have learnt through bitter experience that capitalist development only results in depriving the majority of their livelihood. They are opposing this kind of “development”.
