Make the All India Workers’ strike on January 8-9 a resounding success!

Workers of different sectors of the economy will come together on January 8-9, 2019, in an all-India strike action. The strike has been called to express the resolute opposition of the working class and all working people to the anti-worker, anti-peasant, anti-social and anti-national course being pursued by the ruling capitalist class, headed by the capitalist monopolies.

The All India Workers’ strike is being organized at the call of the joint national convention of trade unions, held in New Delhi on September 28, 2018. Over a thousand leaders and activists of various trade unions, workers’ organisations and industry and sector wise federations from all over the country participated in this convention. They represented all sectors, industry, services and agriculture, public and private. The leaders of organisations of central and state government employees and teachers, postal, defence, railway, insurance, bank and telecom employees participated in the convention. National and state leaders of trade unions of oil, coal, electricity, medical and sales representatives, road transport workers unions, domestic and home based workers were also present. Leaders of workers in the health and education sectors and the scheme workers also participated in the convention.

The January 8-9 All India Workers’ strike is being called in support of the long-standing demands of the working class. These include an end to contract labour system, equal pay and facilities for equal work, a minimum wage of Rs 18000/- per month, universal pension scheme covering all working people, registration of trade union in any workplace within 45 days of application, ending the ceiling on bonus and EPF, increasing the amount of gratuity, halt and reversal of anti-worker amendments to the labour laws and halt and reversal of the privatization program.

The working class has been repeatedly coming out onto the streets in resolute opposition to the privatization, liberalization and globalization program of the capitalist class. It has been consistently opposing the attack on the right of workers to organise themselves into trade unions, as well as other anti-worker amendments to labour laws. It has been raising its voice against various measures aimed at intensifying exploitation, through contractualisation of labour, fixed term contracts, the exploitation of workers by hiring them as apprentices and trainees with no job security, and so on.

The Communist Ghadar Party of India calls on the trade unions and workers’ organisations all over the country to make the strike action of January 8-9, 2019 a success. Let this strike action be a powerful manifestation of the determination of the working class to unite, organize and put an end to these increasing attacks on our livelihood and rights.
