Condemn the proposed Maharashtra Protection of Internal Security Act

The BJP-ruled Maharashtra government has released the draft of Maharashtra Protection of Internal Security Act (MPISA) on August 20 and asked for "suggestions and objections" of people. Past experience of people has shown that the government has no desire to seek enlightened opinion of the working class and people. Its real intent is to manufacture consent of the people for this fascist law.

Fountainhead of fascism and war

This is being written in response to the article entitled '71 years after the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki' in the August 16-31, 2016 issue of MEL that carries the byline `US imperialism remains the fountainhead of fascism and war'. One has to see the connection between the actions that took place over seven decades ago, and the events and horrors that are unfolding in front of our eyes on a daily basis.

Way forward for India

I am writing in response to the important Statement of the CC of the CGPI dated 15th August, 2016 entitled 'On the occasion of the 70th Indian Independence Day: Which way forward for India?' published in the August 16-31, 2016 issue of MEL. This statement is based on the scientific principles of Marxism-Leninism which is based on dialectical materialism and class struggle and sums up the concrete conditions on the ground in the country at this particular time. The Statement begins by giving a summary of the ground reality, the salient features of which are

PM Modi’s speech to the nation on 15th August

Speak what the people want to hear, do what the capitalists want

It was expected that the Prime Minister’s speech to the nation on the occasion of the 70th Independence Day would be filled with claims of achievements of his government in the past two years. So, it was no surprise that he boasted of many things his government is supposed to have done for the people.

The Indian State perpetuates caste discrimination and oppression

Emancipation of Dalits from caste oppression can come only through the class struggle of the proletariat to end all forms of exploitation and discrimination

Nearly 70 years after independence, the scourge of caste oppression continues to haunt India. Numerous dalits are killed every year for daring to challenge the caste system. Dalit women are mercilessly raped and beaten.  Marriage of a dalit man with a higher caste woman is punished in the most heinous manner.  Dalits face discrimination on a daily basis and continue to do the most menial jobs.

Whose interests will GST serve?

Modi dishes out one more lie to the people

The Goods and Services Tax Bill that amends the constitution to enable the GST reform was passed in the Lok Sabha on August 8, 2016. It was earlier passed by the Rajya Sabha. The bill will now be sent to state assemblies for ratification. A few states have already begun ratifying the same, and the government hopes to start implementation from April 2017.

Gujarat land acquisition bill passed

Furthering the interests of the big monopoly capitalists

The Gujarat Land Acquisition Bill, which was passed in the Gujarat Assembly on March 31, received Presidential assent on August 8. Named the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement (Gujarat Amendment) Bill, 2016,this bill amends many of the terms and conditions of the Central Land Acquisition Act introduced by the UPA government in 2013. It is expected to be implemented from August 15, according to the government announcement.

Comrade Fidel Castro turns 90

The 90th birthday of Comrade Fidel Castro has been marked by celebrations not only by the Cuban communists and people, but by progressive humanity all across the world. The struggle of the Cuban people led by their Communist Party in defence of sovereignty and independence continues to be an example of inspiration for all the peoples and nations of the world who are fighting to win and safeguard their independence and sovereignty, and chart their own destiny free from imperialist interference.

Justifying state terrorism in the name of “combatting terror”

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh recently announced that the Central government is working on a plan to provide legal protection to security agencies such as the IB and the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which conduct undercover operations on “suspected terrorist organisations”. At a conference of officials of the Intelligence Bureau and other investigating agencies, the Home Minister is reported to have said that “The government is committed to punishing terrorists.

Parties of the capitalist class claim that there is no
alternative to the program of globalisation, liberalisation
and privatisation. The truth is thatthere IS an alternative.

The alternative is to reorient the economy to fulfil people’s
needs instead of fulfilling capitalist greed. This is the
