Dr. Sulabha Brahme

The Communist Ghadar Party of India mourns the passing away of Dr. Sulabha Brahme, one of the leading political and social activists from Pune, on Thursday, December 1, 2016. She was 84 years of age.

Dr. Sulabha Brahme devoted her active life to the cause of emancipation of the working class and all the exploited and oppressed. Through her several booklets and monographs she protested against the Indian state’s criminal actions and policies and she worked throughout her life towards making the working people conscious of the anti-social, anti-worker, anti-national and anti-people nature of the Indian state. Just a few days back, she was in Purandar to express her solidarity with the people there fighting against the forcible land acquisition by the ruling class. Her last article written a few days before her sad demise was on the devastating impact of the demonetization policy of the central government on the working people.

She has written extensively on the disastrous consequences of various policies of the Indian state and raised her voice against the infamous Enron project in Konkan, the WTO Dunkel Draft, the Jaitapur nuclear power plant, the state- organized communal attacks of the Indian state, as well as against the economic policies to further the interests of the big Indian corporate houses, including the program of globalization through liberalization and privatization. She founded, co-founded or has been associated with and supported several progressive peoples’ organizations in Pune, like the Shankar Brahme Samaj Vidnyan Granthalaya, Lok Vidnyan Sanghatana, Lokayat, Jagatikikaran Virodhi Kruti Samiti, Purogami Mahila Sangathan and Lok Raj Sangathan.

Dr. Brahme was passionate about writing in Marathi, the local language, so that she could reach out to the working people in the remotest parts of Maharashtra, make them aware of the anti-people and anti-social character of the Indian state and inspire them to fight against it.

With the sad demise of Dr. Brahme, we have lost a dedicated social and political activist who till her last breath, remained dedicated to the cause of creating a new society where working people would hold state power. We deeply mourn the loss of one of our comrades and convey our heartfelt condolences to her family.

Lal Salaam to Dr. Brahme!
