Sri Lanka : University teachers’ Struggle

Over 4,000 teachers and 300 professors at 18 public universities in Sri Lanka have declared they will strike work from August 16 2010 unless the government addresses their demands. They have asked for a 25 percent pay increase.

Over 4,000 teachers and 300 professors at 18 public universities in Sri Lanka have declared they will strike work from August 16 2010 unless the government addresses their demands. They have asked for a 25 percent pay increase.

The teachers have not had a pay increase since 1993 and the government has repeatedly ignored their pay claims. The teachers went on a 24-hour strike on August 3, 2010 and have now decided to escalate their struggle.
