Thousands of nurses from private hospitals across Kerala have been on a strike since end of June. They have been demanding fair wages from hospital managements. Ever since their protest began, the nurses have been agitating for their rights, even as they ensure that the health of the patients at their hospitals is not affected.
Their demand is that hospitals should follow the Supreme Court guidelines. In government hospitals, nurses get a basic pay of Rs 22,000 per month, but in private hospitals, even after 20 years of experience, they do not get more than Rs 15,000
The unions had rejected the revised wages fixed by the last Industrial Relations Committee, which had merged the basic pay and DA and fixed the basic pay of nurses at Rs.17,200; including all allowances, the gross salary would come to Rs.18,232.
Both the Indian Nurses’ Association and the United Nurses’ Association are demanding that the minimum basic pay of nurses should be Rs.20,000 as recommended by the Jagdish Prasad Committee appointed by the Supreme Court in November.
