Demonstration by construction workers

Construction worker dharna

The speakers pointed out that since past 5 months work on scholarships for the children of construction workers, maternity benefits, pension, financial assistance for marriage, etc has come to a halt. Despite various legal provisions covering the above, the work on the same in 11 districts of Delhi has been stopped. As a result, the construction workers and their families are being deprived of these rights and entitlements.

Openly declaring the Delhi Labour Department to be anti-labour, they condemned its inaction and held it responsible for the various difficulties caused to the construction workers. Various unions of in Delhi have sent representations and submitted memorandums to the department, but there has been no action and the situation remains pathetic.

The unions and organisation which participated in the demonstration include: Rajdhani Bhavan Nirmaan Kamgaar Union, Building Workers Union, Nirmaan Mazdoor Panchayat Sangam, Delhi Nirman Mazdoor Organisation, Mahanagar Asangatith Mazdoor Union, Self Employed Womens Association (SEWA), Mahanagar Delhi Bhavan and Other Construction Mazdoor Sangh, Nirmaan Mazdoor Shakti Sangathan, Samast Construction Workers Union, Delhi Bhavan Nirmaan Jan Kalyaan Sansthan, Mazdoor Nirmaan Sangh, Delhi Nirmaan Jagati Union, Delhi Nirmaan Hataishi Union, Nirmaan Mazdoor Adhikaar Sangathan, Jagruti Nirmaan Lakyankaari Sangh, and others.

At the end of the demonstration a delegation of the unions submitted their memorandum of demands to the lieutenant governor.
