Two killed in violent clash at Vedanta Alumina plant in Odisha

According to media reports, at least two persons including a security personnel of Odisha Industrial Security Force (OISF) were killed while 30 others were injured in an incident on 18th March 2019 outside the Vendanta Plan in Odisha’s Kalahandi district.

About 500 tribals were protesting outside the Vedanta office when the state’s industrial security force personnel attacked them without any provocation. They were physically assaulted. The demonstrators included people from three neighbouring villages who had surrendered land to Vedanta and hoped to secure jobs for locals in the company and free education for their children in the Vedanta-managed school at Lanjigarh.

The Vedanta Alumina Company acquired around 3,000 acres of land in 2004 in Rangopali, Potagada  Bundel, Bandhuguda and other villages, on the promise of providing jobs. The officials of the company had also promised to provide free education for the children. But neither of these promises have been kept.

Among the demonstrators were also workers protesting the retrenchment of a local employee.

The incident in Odisha’s Vedanta plant happened 10 months after police opened fire on demonstrators protesting against Vedanta‘s copper smelter in Tamil Nadu, killing 13 people.

and privatisation. The truth is thatthere IS an alternative.

The alternative is to reorient the economy to fulfil people’s
needs instead of fulfilling capitalist greed. This is the
