As we go to the press, the official death toll is twenty seven and it is reported that nearly a hundred people have suffered serious injuries. Many people have suffered great economic loss as well. Our Party extends it heartfelt sympathies to the families of the people who have lost their lives, those who are battling for their lives or have suffered grievous injuries, as well as those who have suffered economically. As in the past, the people of Mumbai, cutting across religious and regional barriers came to help the victims.

Almost simultaneous blasts took place at three locations. They were clearly intended to cause maximum damage. The timing was the evening rush hour, 6.45 pm to 7.10 pm. The locations were the important and extremely crowded areas in the diamond market in Opera House,  Zaveri Bazaar, and Kabutarkhana in Dadar.

The monopoly media has immediately started its conjectures as to who is responsible.  Anti Pakistan, anti -Muslim sentiment is predictably being sought to be whipped up, as in the past.   Many times in the past, similar conjectures and accusations against Muslims and Pakistan proved to be false.  Innocent people were victimized, tortured, killed or made to languish in jails without any proof of guilt. Chauvinist hysteria has never helped to discover the truth and punish the guilty, but has actually helped to derail the investigations and keep the truth hidden.

Yesterday's blasts come at a time when India and Pakistan are seriously engaging each other in dialogue to solve outstanding problems. The Pakistani government and people want friendship with India at a time when Pakistan's sovereignty is in danger from the grave threats US imperialism is posing.  Just a few days ago, our country's outgoing Foreign Secretary, Nirupama Rao, observed the changes in Pakistan's approach to terrorism and the need for India to note it. . She also observed that the experience of the past has shown that not talking with Pakistan does not work, and that India must not give up talking with Pakistan.

In the last decade, twice the Indian government called off talking with Pakistan — after the 13th December, 2001 attack on the Indian Parliament, and after the Mumbai terror attack of November 2008. In both these cases, further exposures have either been brushed under the carpet or revealed that someone else is involved. In both cases, US imperialism advanced its aims in the region, strengthening its military position in South Asia while deepening the divisions between India and Pakistan.  Today the US government is seeking to draw India closer to itself while demonizing Pakistan, as part of its strategy to weaken China and prevent an alliance of Asian powers from becoming a rival power to itself.

At the present time, imperialist forces headed by the US who have occupied Iraq and Afghanistan are raining death through drone attacks in Western Pakistan.  China has extended solidarity and support to Pakistan, calling the US operations a violation of sovereignty.  China has officially stated that any US attack on Pakistan’s sovereignty will be considered an attack on China. The US imperialists stand to gain from preventing India getting closer to Pakistan. They are dead against the peoples and countries of any part of Asia getting together to resist them.

We must keep all this in mind while analyzing the bomb blasts.  All possibilities must be considered in the light of the geo-political reality. The perpetrators must be caught, tried and punished. The hidden hand must be exposed.

The Indian government must not accuse anyone or permit such accusations to be aired based on prejudice and not on factual evidence.  Government of India must not stop talking to Pakistan.  If it does so, it will be playing into the hands of precisely those forces that are threatening peace and respect for sovereignty of all nations and peoples in South Asia.
