Election to the post of President will be held in India on 17 July 2017, and counting will be done on 20 July, five days before the term of President Shri Pranab Mukherji expires. Ram Nath Kovind, former Governor of Bihar, has been announced as the candidate of the ruling BJP-led NDA alliance. Meira Kumar, the former Speaker of Lok Sabha, is the Congress-led opposition's candidate.

Demo in support of Gorkha demandsSince early June 2017, the agitation in Darjeeling and surrounding areas, for a separate state for the Gorkha people in West Bengal has become very intense. The agitators have organised an indefinite strike of all government offices and agencies. Gorkha students and working people in other parts of India, including in Jadavpur University in Kolkata and JNU in Delhi, have taken out rallies to express their support to the agitation.

The results of the mid-term elections held in Britain in June reveal that the country is caught in the throes of acute political crisis. In 2015, the bourgeoisie succeeded in manufacturing victory for the Conservative Party and made David Cameron the Prime Minister. Faced with sharp contradictions within its ranks, the British bourgeoisie organized a referendum on BREXIT (Britain’s exit from the EU) in 2016. The referendum results revealed deep division within the bourgeoisie. David Cameron resigned as Prime Minister making way for Theresa May.

Various protest actions had begun in Hamburg nearly two weeks before the Summit. These protest actions demonstrated the resentment of the world’s peoples against imperialism, the capitalist system, the plunder and devastation of nations, militarization and war.

I am writing in reponse to the Statement of the CC of the CGPI dated 5 June 2017 entitled '42nd anniversary of the declaration of National Emergency: Behind the signboard of democracy stands the brutal dictatorship of the biggest monopolies' carried in the June 16-30, 2017 issue of MEL. The National Emergency was a watershed in the history of post-1947 India and understanding the precise class character and the underlying complexion thereof is crucial for the movement and for the working class in order for the revolutionary camp to go forward.

Peasants hold meeting in Tamilnadu's Thoothukudi district

In June 2017, Tamizhaga Vivasayeegal Sangam (Sangam) organized a meeting of peasants near Pasuvandanai in Thoothukudi district of Tamilnadu. Peasants belonging to the nearby villages took active part in this meeting. Besides Sangam leaders and activists, the leaders and activists of Communist Ghadar Party, Workers Unity Movement and Unorganized Workers Federation also took part in this meeting.

100 years ago Ghadar Party was formed by Indians in the US.It was historic milestone in our anti-colonial struggle.

The goal of this party was to organise a revolution to liberate our motherland from British servitude and establish a free and independent India with equal rights for all. It believed this to be the necessary condition for our people to hold their heads high anywhere in the world.
