Dear Editor,

Dear Editor,

I found the article in MEL of 1st to 15th july on the subject of Land Aquisition very thought provoking.

As mentioned in the article in Maharashtra also there are umpteen examples of government acquiring land with some so called "public interest" in mind, but later handing it over to capitalists for minting money. In Thane Belapur area & in Navi Mumbai, many decades ago, land was forcibly taken away from the locals who were given very petty compensation but were promised jobs. This land was given for opening up factories. But after operating factories for 30 to 40 years, capitalist owners of those factories realized that much more money can be made by shutting off the factories & instead developing real estate, They did just that, They threw out literally thousands of workers and today the area is full of swanky buildings, both commercial & residential. The locals of that area whose land was taken away 3 to 4 decades ago are staying in small semi pukka structures. Those structures are being issued demolition notices now! Those locals are not only fighting to save their dwellings, but are also demanding that the government should return their land since the factories have been closed!

It is also well known that many big capitalists like Godrej, Wadia's, Hiranandani's, Tata's, Singhania's, Birla's and many others hold thousands of acres of land which is lying unutilized for decades. But Government doesnot even think of aquiring all this land forcibly in the genuine "public interest" of building houses for the people of Mumbai!

With warm regards

Amit
