I am writing to join in the protest against the terrible torture and murder of Mr. Jayaraj and his son Mr. Immanuel Bennicks at the hands of the Tamil Nadu police in June 2020. I would like to express my anger at the brazen and pre-meditated torture and eventual death of the two persons, and denounce the bogus reason offered which was that they died of natural causes under police custody. This is impossible because the police themselves had asked for additional lungis for them as they were bleeding profusely due to the insertion of lathis that led to the damage of internal organs. These events have taken place in the town of Sathankulam of Toothukudi district of Tamil Nadu.
The facts of the case are clear, which is that the father and son were picked up by the police for a minor altercation over keeping their mobile accessory store open in violation of Corona regulations. The aim of the torture and murder seems to be that of striking terror in the hearts of the entire population. When faced with the anger of the people, the police has started to pretend that it was all a misunderstanding. On the other hand, the callousness and the arrogance of the administration is there for everyone to see with the denial of the facts also the offer of an ex-gratia payment in compensation, as if that pittance can bring back the lives of the two men. The people of India must condemn with the greatest anger the violence perpetrated against them by those who are supposed to be the guardians of their safety.
In particular, this is not an isolated event, but part of a systematic brutal campaign of violence against the people to create an atmosphere of terror so that no organized movement against the atrocities of the Indian State can come into being.
I join the CGPI in extending my condolences to the family of the victims and in the condemnation of the murder of two innocent men. I would like to reinforce the observation that the Indian State thrives on the repressive machinery it has built and deserves the utmost condemnation.
