Recall that the workers have been fighting to have their own union to represent their interest. Earlier in June this year, they were forced to stop work when the company management locked them in the factory premises and sacked the workers who led the effort to register the union. The strike was called off only after management agreed to take the workers back with the workers going ahead with the registration process of their union. However, Management sent signal to the Haryana government that they wanted the government to support them in crushing the workers. The union registration was rejected on some technical ground and company starting sacking all the workers who were active in the agitation. Many were dragged into court cases on trumped up charges. Company illegally started demanding that they will allow any worker to work only if they sign a "good conduct bond", which the workers have refused.

Maruti-Suzuki workers have bravely faced all the attacks from the company management and state agencies. They have remained united in their demands for reinstatement of all sacked workers, recognition of their union and withdrawal of to "good conduct bond". Other workers from the Gurgaon-Manesar belt as well as workers in other parts India and the world have expressed their solidarity with the just demands of the workers. Many unions have organised stoppage of work in solidarity with the workers of Maruti-Suzuki because everyone realizes that it is not just a question of Maruti-Suzuki factory but a question of the entire working class of India. That an attack on one is an attack on all!
